Pentax K S2 Digital SLR Camera with 18 – 50 mm Lens Review

Pentax K S2 Digital SLR Camera is the first pictures I have taken have surpassed my expectations in terms of colors and detail. The specifications of the Pentax K S2 Digital SLR Camera are excellent for the price and so far all the functions are working well, except the app for controlling the camera from a phone or tablet, which is not available yet.

Pentax K S2 Digital SLR Camera with 18 – 50 mm Lens Review

In deciding to purchase the Pentax K S2 Digital SLR Camera I relied to some extent on Pentax’s previous reputation for excellent ergonomics. However I have to say that my initial impressions of the handling of the K S2 are one of disappointment. It weighs about 2lbs with the 18-50 mm lens.

Pentax K S2 Digital SLR Camera Overall design:

The Pentax K S2 Digital SLR Camera right side grip is OK to use, but there is no obvious way of positioning the left hand on the camera, and it needs left hand support because of the weight.

So far I am not finding the Pentax K S2 Digital SLR camera a pleasure to use when hand holding it, although on a tripod it is fine. Having spent over $799.95 on a twin lens kit I will be trying to come to terms with the camera’s handling, and will update this review after some more time with it. In the meantime it might be worth trying the K S2 out in a shop before purchasing it.

Update:

I have now spent more time with the Pentax K S2 Digital SLR Camera and taken it on a field trip to an RSPB reserve. I put the 50-200 lens on and started using it. For me the handling of the camera was transformed. My left hand grips round the base of the lens, while my right hand operates the controls. Everything feels well balanced and comfortable. And the camera just looks right.

Conclusion:

So it seems the small retractable 18-50 lens gives you a small pack size for the camera, which I find useful, and promising image quality (to judge from the first few photos), but also slightly awkward handling because of the lack of an obvious placement for the left hand.

I will be using some small primes with the Pentax K S2 Digital SLR camera on occasions and I expect the handling characteristics will be similar to those of the retractable 18-50.

In every other respect so far the camera is meeting my expectations, so I am giving it four stars based on my first few days with it.
